The Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation has announced that novelist and author Amin Maalouf is the winner of its Cultural and Scientific Award in the twelfth session (2010-2011).
Secretary General of Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation, His Excellency Abdul Hamid Ahmed announced the news at a press conference; saying that the decision was made after several meetings and deliberations of the Foundation's Board of Trustees, who reviewed and discussed the 162 candidates nominated in the twelfth session of the Award and finally Amin Maalouf was declared as the winner of the Cultural and Scientific Achievement Award, which is worth $120,000. By this announcement Maalouf joins the winners' club.
Moreover, His Excellency the Secretary General said that Amin Maalouf represents a vivid memory which has been dedicated, over the past four decades, to introducing the world to important aspects of the history of the East; especially Arab and Islamic History. Mr. Abdul Hamid Ahmed also said that Maalouf's novels are characterized by a strong historical background, a smooth-flowing narrative, a strong plot, and originality and that all of these attributes contribute to highlighting the events, personalities and struggles witnessed by Arab and Islamic worlds, as well as their impact on the West, and hence Maalouf's creativity has helped bridge the gap between the East and the West.
Furthermore, His Excellency Abdul Hamid Ahmed added that Amin Maalouf works are addressed to the general readership, and this explains his popularity among readers from all over the world. "He has brought recognition to many facts of our history through his hard work, his persistence and his relentless research by means of which he expresses and highlights these events and personalities he has written about," Mr. Ahmed said.
In addition, Mr. Ahmed said that Maalouf's books including The Crusades through Arab Eyes, Leo Africanus, Samarkand, The Gardens of Light, and The Rock of Tanios, have earned him the Cultural and Scientific Achievement Award for the current session.
