Venice Film Festival kicks off

The Venice film festival opens on Wednesday, September 1st, with "Black Swan", Directed by Darren Aronofsky, a dark psychological drama starring Natalie Portman as a ballerina who finally lands the lead role but loses her grip on reality as the pressure builds. The arrival of a rival dancer, played by Mila Kunis, triggers obsessive jealousy and sexual liberation in a plot which echoes that of the ballet around which it revolves.
Quentin Tarantino heads the jury, and will be the person who must ultimately decide who walks away with the coveted Golden Lion award at the closing ceremony on September 11. Andrew Lau’s new Chinese film, Legend of the Fist – The Return of Chen Zhen, is an ambitiously film, probably one of the most successful action movies from Chinese cinema, which will hit few years later.
Venice, the world's oldest film festival and one of its most prestigious, has long been looking over its shoulder at Canadian rival Toronto, with which it overlaps and which is seen as cheaper and more business-focused than the Italian event. The competition has intensified, as many movies with world premieres in Venice hit Toronto just days later and others go straight to the Canadian festival.
