  • Born in Baghdad, 1927
  • Befriended Abdul Wahab Al Bayati in elementary school
  • BA in Law, 1949
  • Worked in the civil court of Baaquba 1949-1952 before relocating to Baghdad
  • Started writing stories and plays in 1943
  • Became a judge in Baghdad civil courts, 1965
  • Travelled to France to continue his studies in law where he attracted to literature and arts more than law.
  • Resigned from public service in 1983
  • Migrated to Tunisia in 1990
  • Wrote in London’s Arabic Press: Al Hayat, Al Zamman, Al Sharaq Al Awsat and Al Wasat.

Decision of the General Secretariat   

The Award is to be granted to Fuad Al Takarli in recognition of his works. He is very selective regarding his artistic techniques. The Jury recognizes Al Takarli as one of the most prominent Arab novelists. He has established a distinguished creative style in this genre since his first short story collection The Green Eyes, 1950. He contributed greatly to the Arabic novel scene through his novel The Deep Echo, 1980. Al Takarli’s rich career culminated in Pains and Joys, 1998, which is one of the better Arabic novels that can deservedly be considered a major work.
